Workflow, late submissions and troubleshooting

For Employees Last updated: 06. 09. 2026

Recommended workflow

StageWhat you do
Before the course startsCheck whether Turnitin is available and which assignment type is appropriate.
When creating the assignmentEnter a clear title, the instructions, the due date and the points, and review the settings for storage, comparison and report access.
Before publishingCheck the assignment in the student view if Moodle allows it; otherwise check the visibility of the activity and the dates again.
While submission is openMonitor the assignment inbox and any technical problems.
After the due dateReview the Similarity Reports first, then the content.
When gradingUse comments, QuickMarks and the rubric, and enter the final grade.
Before releasing gradesAlign the feedback release date in Turnitin with the visibility of the grade in the Gradebook.

Late submissions and resubmissions

You enable both options in the submission settings, but the following rules apply:

  • A late submission is possible only for a student who has not submitted the assignment before the due date. For the new Standard Assignment, the official guide states that one submission is allowed in this case.
  • A resubmission is possible up to the due date. Up to three submissions or resubmissions are allowed within 24 hours, counted from the first submission, and each new one overwrites the previous version.

Practical recommendation: if you want students to use Turnitin to improve their drafts, state clearly in the assignment instructions how many resubmissions you expect, by when, and whether the student sees the Similarity Report. This is a pedagogical decision and belongs in the assignment instructions.

Most common problems

ProblemWhat to do
Turnitin is not among the activitiesCheck whether it is available as an External tool. If it is not there either, the Moodle or Turnitin administrator has to configure it.
I cannot change the date or the titleFor the new Standard Assignment, the title, the start date and the due date are edited in Moodle – see Editing an existing assignment.
A change made in Select content is not visibleExisting assignments cannot be edited there; open the settings using the procedure in the instructions for editing an assignment.
The Similarity Report is not there yetThe report may still be generating, or generation may be set for the due date. With resubmissions there can be an additional delay.
The similarity score is very highOpen the report and check the specific matches. A template, quotations, the bibliography or an earlier version of the same assignment can raise the score significantly.
The grade is not in Moodle yetWait a few minutes and check whether the grade item is hidden in the Gradebook – see Releasing grades in Moodle.
