Turnitin: submitting assignments

For Students Last updated: 06. 09. 2026

A Turnitin assignment is an activity inside a Moodle online classroom where you submit a written assignment. Turnitin compares the submitted text with the sources in its databases and produces a Similarity Report. Whether you can see it as well is decided by the course instructor.

A note on terminology: the term “plagiarism level” is not technically correct. Turnitin shows a similarity score, not an automatic finding of plagiarism. A match can also be a correctly cited quotation or an entry in the list of references.

Quick overview: what you need to do

  1. Log in to Moodle and open the online classroom of the course.
  2. Find the Turnitin assignment and open it.
  3. Read the instructions, check the due date, and see whether the instructor has allowed late submissions or resubmissions.
  4. Upload the correct file and review the preview before you submit.
  5. Give the final confirmation of the submission and save the Digital Receipt and the Submission ID.
  6. If the Similarity Report is available, open it and review the matches with sources.
  7. If the instructor has enabled resubmission, submit a revised version before the due date if needed.

Most important: do not treat the procedure as finished once the file is uploaded. The submission is successful only when Turnitin shows a confirmation of a successful submission or the Digital Receipt.

These instructions are based on the official Turnitin Guides documentation (in English). Turnitin and Moodle update their interfaces regularly, so if you notice any differences, follow the instructions of your course instructor and the current documentation.

Note: the appearance of the Turnitin assignment can differ depending on the Moodle version, the institution’s settings, and whether it is a new or a classic standard assignment. The basic submission procedure is the same in all versions. For help, contact your course instructor or support@almamater.si.
